The Power of a Positive Personality
Larry is the owner of LetsBeePositive.com. I would like to tell you his story.
When Larry was six years old he was struck on his bicycle by a car that ran a stop sign. Larry had to be airlifted to a trauma hospital. They performed emergency surgery on the right temporal lobe of his brain to alleviate the pressure from swelling and bleeding. After that, he was in a coma for 28 days.
Prior to the accident, Larry was in the first grade, doing so well he could read and do math at the fifth grade level. After the accident, injuries reduced him to the level of a large newborn. He could not sit up. He did not know any of the family. He could not talk. He was partially paralyzed. The medical staff told us he would probably talk again, but we shouldn’t expect him to walk. He would probably never function as an adult.
Just as a baby does, Larry again learned to sit up. He learned to crawl. Then he learned to walk with the aid of a brace. He finished the first grade at Fletcher Miller School for handicapped kids, and with lots of help was able to return to regular elementary school in the second grade. He continued and later participated in student government before graduating from high school. After that, still with lots of physical help, he went to and graduated from Northeastern Junior College with an Associate’s Degree in photography.
Larry has worked at Elitch Gardens amusement park for over 20 years, and holds a second job as cashier at a local retail store. He and his younger brother Darin, who also has limited skills, share an apartment and divide the duties of living. Both can get just about anywhere on the RTD system. But still developing new skills, Larry decided at the age of 44 to get a driver’s license. He now has even greater independence, owning and driving his own car. Larry understands what it means to be careful, and is one of the safest drivers I know.
Anyone who knows Larry can see and feel his zest for life and his desire to learn and grow. For many years he wanted his own business, but was not sure what it should be. LetsBeePositive was developed to share Larry’s vision of living life with a positive attitude. Larry encourages people to work hard, smile, and love to your job and those who help you. His vision is to love his customers and go the extra mile to provide good service.
